Overview
In my furniture design class, I embraced the challenge of crafting a full-scale piece that merges functionality with aesthetic appeal. My project focused on creating a modular wooden base, paired with artisan hand-upholstered cushions.

The process began with concept planning and conceptualization, where I sketched initial designs and researched materials. Selecting high-quality wood for durability and aesthetic appeal was crucial, ensuring the modular base would be both sturdy and visually appealing. Precision cutting and assembly followed as I translated my designs into tangible components, carefully refining each detail to achieve structural integrity and seamless integration of modular elements. I was able to obtain precise cuts with the use of a water jet and CNC router.
Simultaneously, the upholstery phase involved selecting fabrics harmonizing with the wood's natural tones while providing comfort and durability. Hand-upholstering the cushions required attention to detail and craftsmanship, ensuring each stitch and fold enhanced aesthetics and functionality.
Finally, assembly of the wooden base and integration of the cushions marked the culmination of a process where creativity and craftsmanship merged to bring my vision to life—a modular piece of furniture that embodies both form and function.
The final showcase was attended by guests including Northwestern professors, board members, and fellow students. I had the opportunity to speak about the inspiration behind my piece, detailing the innovative features. It was a moment to share not just the physical manifestation of my labor, but also the creative process, and challenges.
